We always wanted a beagle.
In the middle of COVID, three of us brothers got in a car and drove ten hours to Ohio to bring one home. We called him Dawson.
He had the floppy ears and the restless beagle nose, and a habit of pushing his whole face into your hands. Grabbing his snout became our way of saying hello to him. Then it became what we called him. Then it became what we called every good dog we met.
We only got two years with Dawson. We lost him far too soon.
His absence made one thing very clear to our family. Life is better with a dog around. That is the reason snouts exists.
